Men in Black

Men in Black (MIB), in regard to UFO conspiracy theories, are believed to be men who may be aliens dressed in black suits who often claim to be government agents who harass or threaten UFO witnesses.  In no uncertain terms, they direct the UFO witness to keep their mouth shut in regard to what they have seen.  Further, the term has frequently been used to describe strange men working for unknown organizations, which include various branches of the government; the whole purpose of the encounter is designed to protect secrets or to perform some other bizarre activity.  The terms “Men in Black” are generic in nature, and are used to refer to odd, threatening, or mysteriously behaved individuals whose show up on the scene typically very shortly after the sighting of a of a UFO.

Reports, as early as 1947, of Men in Black described them as men of short stature with olive colored complexions, or with deeply tanned unblemished skin. They may be wearing sunglasses and black suits as well as driving shinny new black cars.

Some UFO enthusiasts believe that Men in Black are likely to be either aliens or androids that are controlled by aliens.  These folks are believed to be sent out in order to help hide alien activity on Earth. Their bizarre appearance and behavior may be explained by the extraterrestrial origins of these ‘beings’ as well as their unfamiliarity with the accepted behavior of our society.

There are several facts in regard to describing MIB:

There appearance is described as olive complexions with Asian or Gypsy-like features. There eyes are often described as strange and sometimes glowing; they are usually driving shiny new black cars of various makes and models.

The speech patterns of MIBs tend to be in a monotonous, mechanical tone, often with an accent. Witnesses have reported sentence construction and choice of words, as rather peculiar.

Clothing is invariably new black suits, black hats and sometimes sun glasses. Such clothing is sometimes described as being made from a strange material.

Typically an encounter involves a confrontation with two or three of these beings, hardly ever just one. They often claim to be with or represent some government agency (which later proves to be false) and they may even briefly flash official-looking ID cards. Those who are visited by MIB have reported feeling ill following the encounter, sometimes for days.

On the surface it would appear that MIB is only one of many urban legends that that cannot be taken seriously.  However, a brief review of human history suggests that this might not be the case. A tradition of MIB-types can be found in many past accounts, such mysterious dark-clothed individuals with evil intent can be traced back to ancient times and across many cultures. As far back as biblical times there has been a tradition in the Middle East of men dressed in black robes and turbans attempting to lure victims out into the desert for unspecified purposes.   In central and southern Europe during the Middle Ages there existed a real fear among the peoples of those regions of the black-clad beings who traveled about the countryside performing acts, such as vampirism on humans and livestock alike.  Pixie / Elf lore references human-looking “fairies” who dress in black and appeared to be delighted when causing harm in the human world. The fact that MIB are often described as having Asian features is interesting in light of the fact that there is a very old myth in China, Tibet, and India stating that a superior race of humans live beneath the surface of the earth who sometime send "agents" dressed in black to the surface to survey and or influence human affairs. (This is called the "King of the World" myth.) Many native Americans still say they fear the "Black Man" who has lurked in forests with malicious intent for untold generations.

One of the "classic" oddities of MIB visitation is the unusual incompetence or bizarre behavior on the part of the MIB. They are seemingly mystified by human customs. They are poor taskmasters regarding imitation. For instance, they often express amazement at the most ordinary objects, such as a ball-point pen, and they have been known to ask unsuitable or simply rude questions.

This phenomenon was initially and most frequently reported during the 1950s and 1960s. Some researchers such as John Keel, who also was a noted American journalist and influential UFO researcher (best known for his book: The Mothman Prophecies) suggested similarities between Men in Black reports and earlier demonic accounts. Keel points out that MIBs are a modern-day sign of the same thing that was interpreted as the devil or encounters with other mythical beings. Men in Black, nor the devil, are believed to be quite human, and witnesses may not recognize this fact until midway through an encounter; other wise, I at least wonder, why anyone would talk to such beings in the first place.

The release of the movie Men in Black in 1997, starring Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith as Agent K and Agent J, based on Lowell Cunningham's comic book about a secret organization that monitors and suppresses paranormal activity on Earth, not only brings forth the acknowledgement of the wide spread occurrences of such events but offers comic relief to the topic as well.  The film was followed by Men in Black: The Series and its 2002 sequel Men in Black II.   Men in Black III is scheduled to be released in 2012.

One of the most unusual aspects of the UFO mystery is probably the Men in Black (MIB) incidents.  It usually involves the slight intimidation of UFO witnesses by strange visitors dressed almost entirely in black. Years of collective evidence points to a definite trend that is unlikely to be a mere illusion. The identity of the MIB is just as vague as anything else related to UFO's. Secret government agencies, the CIA, as well as aliens of some sort have been placed forward as possible answers.
